Infant Program
(3 Months - 18 Months)
Starting Program for the future
Reston Montessori School is pleased to be ozne of the few Montessori schools offering an Infant/Young Toddler program. We refer to this program as The Nido. In Italian Nido means “nest”. Our Nido is designed to be comfortable and welcoming, so that you and your child will feel at home here.
The Nido Environment
In Italian Nido means “nest”. Our Nido is designed to be comfortable and welcoming, so that you and your child will feel at home here.
All Montessori environments are prepared by the teacher in order to create a space for the child to explore without undue adult intervention. The environment should offer “freedom within limits” – a safe space, child sized furniture, and materials that have a clear and useful purpose. Because of the carefully designed space, the child learns to respect the materials and the people with whom he spends his day. One of the teacher’s primary responsibilities is to help the child learn to use the “work” on the shelves.
This Nido environment is divided into five distinct areas: Sleeping, Movement, Language, Sensorial, and Practical Life. We hope to be your choice for private infant school programs.
The Nido Philosophy
The first three years of life are the most critical period in your child’s life. It is our goal to nurture your child’s abilities, and to help her develop habits that will help her throughout her life. Thus as your infant grows, we will help her follow a daily routine, be kind to others, and to love learning.
In this phase of life she is constantly learning, absorbing everything in her environment. We recognize that the child will develop mentally, physically, and emotionally when she is free to explore her world. So we create “a prepared environment, in which the child, set free from undue adult intervention, can live her life according to the laws of development” (Maria Montessori).

Language
The use of sign language is evident in the Nido environment .Simple commands of more, please, milk, diaper change are used on a daily basis. When changing diapers, the teachers are consistently talking to the children, letting them know what is to come. When eating solids, we let the children know what they are eating, ask them to open their mouth and chew. Our focal point for babies is to make sure their needs are met with the schedule provided by the parents. As they get older, the children get into the routine themselves. Sign language turns into saying the words as their confidence and independence grows

Practical Life
As the babies continue to explore the environment, they are pulling work from the shelf onto the floor, working on the shelf, and getting their fine motor movement going. When they become walkers, they are involved in all aspects of their needs. For instance, they walk into the bathroom, take their diapers from their bins, wash their hands in the sink, and dry their hands with paper towels. During lunch, the children carry their lunchbox from their cubby to the table and attempt to unzip the lunchbox. Once they are finished with their lunch , we ask them to clean up. This entails putting their dibs in the hamper and putting plates in the right bins to be washed. The goal before moving into the preprimary program is for the children to learn to help themselves.

What Parents are Saying
A review on greatschools.org
Our daughters have been attending Reston Montessori since September.Coming from a traditional education environment to Montessori learning transitioned them into a thoughtful learner. They questions processes and asks why, instead of adapting to doing the same thing over and over again the same way. Their kind teachers and adorable Director let you trust and believe that everything they are teaching will be carried with them in their future . I would recommend Reston Montessori to any parent who wants to provide their child the opportunity to grow outside the boundaries of traditional education and allow the child to find their hidden strengths and build on them.

I have been sending my toddler here and we absolutely love it! She’s thriving and learning so much. She had met every developmental milestone months early. The teachers are so caring, nurturing, and loving to all of the children. I can’t say enough good things about RMS.

My daughter is thriving beautifully at RMS – I couldn’t be more happy with her progress and we’ve only just begun. The teachers are kind, patient and incredibly supportive of her growth. I’m provided direct, specific and constructive feedback so I can echo the Montessori Method at home and help my baby girl continue to achieve the tasks she SO wants to master. The administrative staff is very helpful and they communicate consistently which is a nice change of pace from our last school. I know my daughter is learning and growing every day — she’s safe, happy, challenged and supported. So thrilled I made the move to RMS!!
