Speach & Language

 

Clearly Speaking Therapy is a private pediatric speech and language practice in Herndon. Debbie Jones, M.Ed., CCC-SLP and Kristina Landas, M.A., CCC-SLP work with children who have various needs, including language disorders, apraxia of speech, articulation disorders, tongue thrust, social-pragmatic difficulties, oral-motor dysfunction, Autism Spectrum Disorders, reading comprehension difficulties, stuttering and auditory processing disorder. At Clearly Speaking Therapy, we strongly believe in a collaborative model. Working with your child's family, pediatrician, school and other professionals is essential in order to provide the most successful therapy.

Academic Therapy

 

If your child has been tested for a language based reading disability or dyslexia, and an intervention of an academic therapist has been suggested, Reston Montessori School offers the additional services of an academic therapist who will work with your child on site for an additional fee. Kathleen Lanfear, founder of RMS is a certified academic therapist. The primary identifying characteristic of dyslexia is a specific difficulty learning to read words accurately and fluently. Research suggests that individuals with dyslexia process language differently from others. Differences in brain structure, organization, and function are related to difficulties in processing written and spoken language. Consequently, learning to read, write and spell in the early grades is perplexing due to representing the sounds. Poor phonological awareness (a sensitivity to the sounds in a word and the ability to segment and manipulate them), visual and verbal memory problems, expressive language problems such as word-retrieval, all contribute to the condition that is called dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a common but treatable condition. With well-planned informed instruction most individuals with dyslexia can learn to read, spell, write and use language well enough to accomplish their goals. Although dyslexia does not disappear, it can be overcome.
